RVZR on Exploring Identity Through Art

For artist RVZR, a South African and Indian creative raised in Hong Kong, identity has always been a complex puzzle. Growing up feeling like an 'Afrocentric Alien,' she navigated layers of cultural confusion that eventually became the fuel for her work. Today, she explores her connection to her heritage by incorporating distinct African features into the doodles that have become integral to her artistic signature.

RVZR describes her workflow as impulsive. She sketches wherever she feels comfortable, allowing the process to build her confidence stroke by stroke. For her, style is a matter of muscle memory.

However, she refuses to stay stagnant. RVZR is a student of the internet, constantly leveling up her abilities through focused experimentation—from mixed media collages to Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. She actively teaches herself animation through YouTube tutorials, using the generous knowledge shared by the online art community as a foundation for her growth.

Her work is heavily influenced by Salvador Dali—and not just because the two share the same birthday!

Like the surrealist master, RVZR designs animations to reveal jarring storylines hidden within original static images. She loves to tinker with viewer expectations, presenting something familiar before revealing something slightly 'ajar,' transforming the narrative and challenging what the viewer thinks they are seeing.

Where is RVZR heading next?

From her dive into the world of NFTs to her advice on dropping out of art school and trusting your intuition, there is much more to this artist's story. To read the full feature, check out EMERGENCE, the 1st volume of INTERLUNAR’s zine.
